Art & Fermentation: Exploring the Microbial World in Food - October 13, 20
Vegetable Ferments
Discover the hidden world of fermentation through both art and science in this two-part workshop series. Together, we’ll explore how microbes transform simple vegetables into vibrant, living foods while slowing down to notice the colors, textures, aromas, and patterns that emerge throughout the process. Using observation as both scientific and creative practice, participants will create original postcard-sized artwork inspired by the beauty of microbial transformation.
Session One: Fermentation Creation
Creating Your Own Fermented Vegetables
In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore how microbes have shaped us through history. Students will examine fermentation through the lens of our current environment and food system in order to receive a deeper understanding of the importance of the microbial world. Through lecture, guided discussion, observation, reflection, and the simple act of making, participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the invisible microbial communities that surround us every day. A fermentation kit (jar, glass weight, airlock, and vegetables/spices) will be provided.
Session Two: Making Art From Your Fermentation Experience
In this second workshop, participants will return with their ferment to explore the changes that have unfolded through sight, smell, taste, and close observation. Together, we’ll examine some of our ferments under the microscope, discovering the remarkable microbial world that has become active during the fermentation process.
Inspired by the experience, participants will create an original piece of art using natural pigments from their fermented vegetables (a selection of shared pigments will also be available) translating colors, textures, and patterns of fermentation into a unique work of art.
